Speaking Frankly

Fans of Herbert Keppler's blog, "Speaking Frankly," and his magazine column, "Inside Straight," have noticed his silence for the past month or so. The reason? He has been sidelined by a conflicting regimen of medications that has temporarily left him unable to make it into the office. While his recovery is the focus of all his energies now, he's not too busy to receive cards and letters of support sent to his normal snail-mail address:

Dear Herbert, I wish you all the best in the year 2008.

I wish you all the best ! We must meet at Photokina again !!

Miha Podlogar/Slovenia

I am recent reader of Pop Photo now. I have enjoyed your colunms before in Modern Photography, and then in the late 1990's Pop Photo. I did not even know that you were ill. Hope you all the best in 2008 get well now. By the way when I first started reading you I was the proud owner of a Miranda D, Too bad they went out of business.

Burt--

I've been a fan of yours since your days at Modern Photography dating farther back than I care to remember (or maybe farther than I can remember). Your influence on honest reporting and fair reviews is a major factor in Pop Photo's lead in the field. Get well soon and resume being the curmudgeon we all love.

Get well soon, Burt. Just one of your many fans.

Big fan of yours, Herbert. From the days of your SLR Notebook. Rest and get well. I hope to meet you someday.

I read your articles monthly since 1972. Since then, I have learned a lot over photography. I have also used your Pentax and Nikon manuals.
Get well soon. From Córdoba, Spain, I wish you all the best.

Hi Burt - Today, something told me to Google your name and I found this latest news. Hope you're ok and I know you're a tough cookie. It's been a long time since I worked for you (started when I was 21 - will be 50 this year!!!!) but I always think of you and the MP gang!
I'll be in touch, I promise.

I just heard the news of Herbert's passing, I wish to extend my condolences to all who knew him. Throughout my photographic life, he has always been an inspiration and source of direction. Goodbye to one of the greats.

Burt. I can't believe you are not longer with us. Your contribution to the photo industry and we photo enthusiasts have been so deep. But from heaven I'm sure you will intercede for us to become better photographers and our manufacturers to give us better products. Rest In Peace. May the Lord keep you and guard you in the Heaven for ever and ever. Amen.

Mr. Keppler has been a key source of information and inspiration for me for many years. Though I know him only through the pages of Modern and Popular Photograhy, I never missed a single column. I am truly saddened by his passing. Thank you for years of inspiration.

Jason Schneider certainly did a nice write-up for Mr. Keppler. It captured the spirit of the man and properly emphasized his integrity and devotion to our hobby.

I always appreciated the absence of ballyhoo and BS in Mr. Keppler's articles, columns and write-ups. Who out there now writing for the current photo magazines will continue to carry his torch. I suspect nobody.

Tom

It is with great sadness that I read the news that Herbert Keppler is no longer with us. I enjoyed reading his columns & have learnt a lot through them. Like all good things this one has also come to an end & we will not be able to read him Speaking Frankly, but will only be able to read From The Keppler Files.

I've read Herbert Keppler's columns for many years. I've posted a brief blog entry noting his passing.

Mr. Keppler, I'll miss you.

I was very sad to read of Mr Keppler's passing. I have read his columns since I purchased my first issue of Modern Photography in October of 1970. He will be missed.

I was very much saddened to read of Herbert Keppler's death. It made me glad I sent him an e-mail a few years ago thanking him for helping me decide on equipment purchases for more than fifty years. I always looked forward to his articles in Modern and Popular Photography. What a great source of information he has been... I will miss him for sure.
